What is it like to have someone believe in you? What does it feel like? How does it impact you? How does it change you? I did not grow up knowing what it felt like to have someone believe in me, but I married a man who continually lifts me up and encourages me to soar. He would be the first to tell you he is a sap and loves a great inspirational story. Given his parallel love of sports, I am not surprised at how he gravitated towards the television series <em>Ted Lasso<\/em>. I think he has watched the entire series at least four times. Maybe more. Probably more. Definitely more. I love coaching. Now, I&#8217;m gonna say this again just so you didn&#8217;t think it was a mistake the first time I said it. For me, success is not about the wins and losses. It&#8217;s about helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the field. And it ain&#8217;t always easy, Trent, but neither is growing up without someone believing in you.\u201d<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Leadership Styles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">What can we learn from <em>Ted Lasso<\/em>? Ted Lasso embodies the type of leader who inspires people to become better than they are. He draws out the best qualities in people. In his book <em>Leading with Nothing to Lose<\/em>, Simon P. Walker discusses different styles of leadership. He defines 8 different types of leaders based on three different characteristics: presented \/ reserved, strong\/weak, and consolidating\/expanding.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Commanding (Presented, Strong, Consolidating or PSC)<\/li>\n<li>Pacesetting (Presented, Strong, Expanding or PSX)<\/li>\n<li>Foundational (Reserved, Strong, Consolidating or RSC)<\/li>\n<li>Visionary (Reserved, Strong, Expanding or RSX)<\/li>\n<li>Consensual (Presented, Weak, Consolidating or PWC)<\/li>\n<li>Self-Emptying (Reserved, Weak, Consolidating or RWC)<\/li>\n<li>Serving (Reserved, Weak, Expanding or RWX)<\/li>\n<li>Affiliative (Presented, Weak, Expanding or PWX)<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The Visionary Leader (RSX)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Walker describes the Visionary Leader: \u201cSees behind or beyond the present situation. Redraws horizons and inspires belief in others. Dissatisfied with the status quo and accepted norms and practices. Idealistic and passionate. May be remote and unrealistic.\u201d<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Walker defines four elements to the Visionary strategy:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Highlight the current problems without providing premature solutions<\/li>\n<li>Provide opportunities to dream dreams and explore possibilities<\/li>\n<li>Provide vocabulary that will redefine people\u2019s current horizons<\/li>\n<li>Provide opportunities to build a sense of community \u2013 vision (RSX) is often closely related to belonging (PWC)<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He uses Martin Luther King, Jr. as a modern example of a Visionary Leader. I would like to suggest that Ted Lasso represents fictional example this type of leader.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/ted-lasso-series-memes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32772\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/ted-lasso-series-memes-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/ted-lasso-series-memes-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/ted-lasso-series-memes-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/ted-lasso-series-memes.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ted Lasso: Visionary Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have not watched <em>Ted Lasso<\/em>, I highly recommend it (though fair warning, there is quite a bit of language). Walker writes, \u201cThe Visionary strategy offers people another way, an alternative to the one they have hitherto taken as read.\u201d<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> Before moving to England to become a football (soccer) coach, Ted was an American football coach. Many wonder how that even makes sense and question his qualifications for the job. He believes in the people around him. Such as encouraging a player by saying, \u201cYou know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It&#8217;s a goldfish. It has a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish.\u201d<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> He gifts another player with the book <em>A Wrinkle in Time<\/em> as an encouragement to this man to bear the burden of leadership on the team.<a href=\"\/\/BC3F6BD3-2E64-4422-8F01-D57EFC90295A#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/adam-krikorian-4.png.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/adam-krikorian-4.png-300x300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/adam-krikorian-4.png-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/adam-krikorian-4.png-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/adam-krikorian-4.png.webp 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">His unique and refreshing approach to coaching and life inspires even one of his greatest critics. Trent Crimm, a sportswriter who follows him for a day, writes of Ted:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHis coaching style is subtle, it never hits you over the head, slowly growing until you can no longer ignore its presence. Whether that means allowing followers to become leaders, or in a show of respect, eating food so spicy it&#8217;s sure to wreck massive havoc on his intestinal system.
