{"id":27327,"date":"2021-03-08T17:06:36","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T01:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/?p=27327"},"modified":"2021-03-08T17:06:36","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T01:06:36","slug":"when-heroes-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/when-heroes-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"When Heroes Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s an old saying that goes, \u201cDon\u2019t ever meet your heroes.\u201d The theory goes that the moment you actually meet the people you admire most, you\u2019ll come to find they aren\u2019t what you always thought they would be.\u00a0 This is a common trope that has made it into various forms of media \u2013 that moment where the young, starry eyed protagonist finally meets the object of their worship only to be disappointed (but it\u2019s the journey <em>to <\/em>the hero that matters, right?). But what actually puts leaders into these positions? And why is it dangerous?<\/p>\n<p>Simon Walker talks about how leaders become \u201cdefended\u201d \u2013 or how they protect their own insecurities. While in part it comes from the leader themselves, at other times it comes from the followers<em>.<\/em> Walker breaks it down into three things leaders experience:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>Idealization.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0More commonly known as \u201chero worship\u201d. Walker writes, \u201cMany followers need their leaders to be everything they themselves struggle to be: they need to believe in someone who doesn\u2019t doubt, who is never defeated, who doesn\u2019t fall for the same routine petty temptations that they do.\u201d<a name=\"_ftnref1\"><\/a>[1]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><em>Idealism<\/em>. <\/strong>Because most leaders are idealists to some extent, \u201cthe leader lives all the time with a discrepancy between the world that she wants (and wants others) to inhabit and the world she (and others) actually do inhabit.\u201d<a name=\"_ftnref2\"><\/a>[2] This cognitive dissonance can be both constructive and destructive as they try to hold on to the ideal for better or worse.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong><em>Unmet Emotional Needs<\/em><\/strong>. Walker writes, \u201cLeadership happens when a person takes responsibility for someone other than herself.\u201d<a name=\"_ftnref3\"><\/a>[3] However, when the leader feels he or she must always bear the burden of others\u2019 emotional needs, he or she begins to wear thin as they begin to neglect their own emotional needs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As Walker unfolds these challenges and walls leaders build around themselves, it becomes clear that <strong>leaders lock themselves away out of fear of rejection. <\/strong>If we stop and really think about it, the pressure that we put on leaders is insurmountable. It\u2019s no wonder that so many leaders eventually crack under the pressure they face. Our culture embraces strength over weakness, but does this only further harden our hearts in the end?<\/p>\n<p>In response to Walker\u2019s three observations, I offer three counters as a means of seeking balance to them:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cMeet\u201d Your Heroes.<\/em><\/strong> The reason why we should never meet our heroes is the exact reason why we <em>should<\/em>meet our heroes. It does not need to be a physical meeting, but diving into their story and their lives in an attempt to understand who they are goes a long way. The moment we meet our heroes is the moment the fa\u00e7ade is dropped. They are no longer the Herculean demigod of our imagination, but rather they are\u2026human. The mask is removed and they are seen for who they are: A real person. <strong><em>What mask have we ourselves been wearing?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><em>Seek a Communal Vision.<\/em> <\/strong>When all we know is what\u2019s swimming around in our head, the line between reality and imagination becomes blurred. We see the world through <em>our <\/em>eyes and can lose sight of what\u2019s really around us. This is why it\u2019s so important to bring people into our work and to share the vision and goal with others. <strong><em>Has our vision driven us? Or have we driven our vision?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong><em>Find a Guide. <\/em><\/strong>During my time in university, professor told us, \u201cThere are two types of people in this world: People who have been counseled and people who need counseling.\u201d Bearing the weight of people\u2019s emotional needs is exhausting.
