Today if I offer you $1 million or the alternative total result of starting $1 today and keep doubling the amount every next day for 30 days, which option would you take. I’m sure many would take the lump sum amount of $1 million because it look obviously the bigger amount until you get down to calculating for the second option which will be $536,870,912 by day 30 and $8.6 billion by day 34, astronomical figures compared to the lump sum $1 million. Hypothetically, if we adopted this multiplication model where we are to thoroughly disciple two new believers within a day and coach them to a point where they can win and disciple two believers in turn and they keep doing likewise and keep passing on the discipleship model in a similar pattern, we could win the whole entire world population of 7.7 billion[1] within 34 hypothetical days and we all go to heaven.

Paul points us to a similar model in the Bible[2] as he tells Timothy to entrust the things he has heard from him among many witnesses, to faithful men who shall be able to teach others also. It is the model of intentional discipleship and deliberate equipping and mentoring of leaders to multiplying yourself and creating a structured accountability model to ensure its continuity. It takes intentionality, deliberate clear goal setting and a lot of effort to develop faithful leaders that can recruit and in turn pass on the button to the next level of leaders. It’s a very effective leadership development pipeline. This kind of model is best implemented within a structured system of accountability that allows for top down mentorship but also bottom up accountability.

Camacho in his book Mining for Gold[3], brings out this model of coaching leaders, in which leaders are obligated to dig the gold that God has deposited in themselves, develop with the help of God through The Holy Spirit but to also help others around them to find the gold in themselves and equally develop into great leaders that can be used of God in the church today. He points us to the structured system of the church that provides for leaders that have been refined by God to reach out to other leaders who are under them, to coach them in an accountability environment that ensures that these coaching relationships are cascaded downwards in a perpetual growth and multiplication model that will lead to healthy church growth. Its key to note that Camacho advances his model with an underlying assumption that God has deposited precious gold in every person and when that gold is dug and refined, you end up with thriving godly leaders who are precious like gold.[4]

If we as leaders are to succeed in God’s work, its instrumental for us to embrace Camacho’s coaching model that is scriptural based. He refers us to the Bible in 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 that every believer carries in themselves a treasure hidden in our earthly vessels which he equates to God’s nature dwelling in us as His Holy Spirit, a member of the Trinity dwelling and flowing through the believer.[5] As a church leader Camacho’s book is a treasure and will certainly be part of my toolbox in developing myself and other leaders through couching. I identify so much with this model because we have developed many leaders that are now pastors and church leaders in outreach Hope Churches in Kenya. Equally, we continue to develop leaders in the ministry organization that I lead, missions of Hope International, in our growth and expansion strategy within Kenya but even more as we prepare to launch in other countries like Liberia, South Sudan and Tanzania among other nations in future.

In my research on equipping church leaders with financial literacy tools to economically empower Christians in vulnerable communities, I find Camacho’s book as a good lead towards an effective financial literacy curriculum for church leaders. I look forward to meeting Tom Camacho and rereading his book several more times as a reference book for coaching and developing my leadership and other leaders.

[1] Current World polulation – Worldometers.
