{"id":22037,"date":"2019-03-07T10:06:40","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T18:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/?p=22037"},"modified":"2019-03-07T10:07:08","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T18:07:08","slug":"22037-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/22037-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding How To Go With The Flow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <em>Simple Habits for Complex Times<\/em>, Jennifer Garvey Berger and Keith Johnston set out to help leaders navigate through the rise of VUCA: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> The style of the book while packed with research and analytical data is written in an easy to digest format that both academics and non-academics will enjoy. Kirkus in viewing the work writes, &#8220;Their thoughtful book is a kind of guide for grown-ups; it touts simple habits one can develop but acknowledges there are no simple solutions.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> In this same vein the thesis of the authors to the reader is simple and covers three aspects: 1. ask different questions (instead of having the answers), 2. take multiple perspectives (even when we disagree), and 3. see the systems (including emergence), but in reality are hard to implement because often as leaders we are more focused on what we think is right versus bringing others into the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>In, <em>The Dark Side of Transformational\u00a0leadership:\u00a0A Critical Perspective, <\/em>Tourish writes on charismatic leadership saying,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In particular, Maccoby (2000) suggests that many charismatic leaders are narcissists \u2013 that is, people with an inordinately well-developed self-image, in which they take great pride and on which they reflect frequently. They are also likely to have a strong need for power, high self-confidence and strong convictions (De Vries et al. 1999). Rather than flexibly responding to feedback, the narcissistic but charismatic visionary leader is inclined to perceive reality through the distorting prism of his or her vision.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berger and Johnston underline this same perspective and understanding writing,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Now research tells us that charismatic leaders are more likely to leave the organization in a mess; that even when we think we\u2019re making decisions with clear heads, we\u2019re actually responding to unconscious thoughts; and that all-powerful leaders often go all-powerfully wrong.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were a lot of impactful things in this book, but one of the most significant parts was the understanding of the Cyenfin Framework <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22038 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM.png 1172w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM-224x300.png 224w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM-768x1027.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM-765x1024.png 765w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM-150x201.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-07-at-12.52.41-PM-300x401.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a>for decision making. In my context many of the leaders I know still operate from a commonplace mindset (this is how it has been, so we do not need to change) rather than understanding the arena of complexity. The authors state, &#8220;complexity is about getting our heads around what is possible (because anything could happen) rather than what is probably going to happen (which is determined from what has happened before).\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> Seeing that one of Generation Z&#8217;s central characterization is \u201cWi-Fi Enabled\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a> moreover\u00a0another is entrepreneurship<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> as the Wharton School declares that \u201calready one defining characteristic is abundantly clear: This generation is Wi-Fi enabled\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> also, research points out that 76% already make their own money part-time.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22040 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2.jpg 990w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2-768x904.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2-870x1024.jpg 870w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2-150x177.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Gen-Z-The-Most-Entrepreneurial-Generation-IG2-300x353.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/a>In summation, Gen Z is growing up in an &#8220;always on&#8221; world and &#8220;make your path mindset&#8221; which breeds personal and professional complexity. What is the answer for leaders, Berger is helpful again writing;<\/p>\n<p>When leaders really understand that parts of their world really are complex and unpredictable, though, they have a different task. Instead of clarity about what the future will look like, the job for leaders in complex spaces is to get a diverse set of perspectives on the current conditions to make sense of what direction to take. They need to use that sense of direction to create the conditions for people to come up with a set of safe-to-fail experiments to learn from as they reshape the organization.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the framework of Spirit-led Leadership, the &#8220;direction&#8221; is set by the Spirit. As we seek to reach and lead Gen Z, we must embrace the curiosity of following the Spirit (which will connect with them in their entrepreneurial spirit) instead of trying to create clarity.
