Th<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">erefore,<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">it tends to emphasize the guilt and law motifs in Scripture. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Sometimes Eastern views are not seen or understood to Western eyes. For example, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">God\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">s glory is an important focus in the Bible. Wu states, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The glory of God is a major theme throughout the Bible. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>\u201c<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>All have sinned and come short of the glory (honor) of God<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>(Rom 3:23) is a central diagnosis of the human condition, calling for salvation. Humans have dishonored God and themselves and this condition needs redemption. Yet, Western theology tends to treat Honor <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>S<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>hame as primarily a social-science issue, not a theological problem on the same level as law.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\">2<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>. \u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/blind.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21647 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/blind-300x127.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/blind-300x127.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/blind-150x64.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/blind.jpeg 344w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Crossing cultures and not adjusting our perceptions have created much confusion. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">John<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Griffith in 1859, claimed, &#8220;Sin, however, in the Scriptural sense, is not recognized by their system. The contrast of good and evil, according to their view, resolves itself into a difference in degree.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\">3<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">James Legge<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">said \u201cConfucianism nor Daoism knew anything about the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">propitiation<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">of sin\u2026The knowledge of God in Confucianism, which has become a heritage of the Chinese people, is very precious; but the restriction of the worship of Him to the sovereign has prevented the growth and wide development among them of a sense of sin.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\">4<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">When viewed through the lens of Western theological concepts, Chinese seem to have no view or understanding of the atonement or sin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> Clearly understanding the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">contrast of a Western (legal\/<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">individualistic) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">and Eastern (honor\/shame, relational harmony) understanding of the gospel helps us to see how confusion can arise. This is especially true when evangelicals do not take the time to develop their <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4sl.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21643 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4sl.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4sl.jpeg 223w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4sl-150x152.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a>intellectual depth<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">For example,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">taking the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Four Spiritual Laws<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">and simply <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">translat<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">ing them into Mandarin, for the purpose of sharing the Gospel, makes an incorrect assumption about the audience it will be used with. The problem is that the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Four Spiritual Laws<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">formulate the gospel in a<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"de-DE\"> Western <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">way<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">So, translating this Western worldview in the Mandarin language brings confusion and incorporates cultural barriers. These concepts do not speak to the hearts of Chinese. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> In fact there are many times that when we focus only on bridges that relate to us and our worldview, we create converts that only accept our way as right and their own culture as wrong. Those that strive to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"pt-PT\">contextualiz<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">e by<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"pt-PT\">limit<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">[ing] the relationship between Scripture and culture to a few select points, their bridges may in fact act as a wedge between the gospel and the local culture.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\">5<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> This kind of contextualization is then superficial.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">Enoch Wan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> writes, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Christianity should not be transplanted to China in a Western pot; it should be transplanted and rooted in Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/u.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21663 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/u-300x149.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/u-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/u-150x74.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/u.png 319w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a>soil \u2026Chinese values of family, honor, and harmony should produce a gospel message that corrects the overemphasis on the forensic nature of the Gospel<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\">6<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Chinese desire to understand the gospel, atonement, reconciliation and ultimately a relationship with Jesus in ways that are not western, but rather speak to the roots of their own narratives and traditions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> Understanding the atonement of Christ through Chinese hearts is key to true inculturation. The atonement is seen through the relationships of honor and shame. We shamed God with our sin and according to scriptures the only way to restore that honor is through the death of Christ. If Christ did not die, God would lack honor and is shameful. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Wu puts it like this, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica Neue, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The cross saves God<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>\u2019s \u2018<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>face<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u2026Jesus died for God.
