It was ready and available for the choosing. I love when someone else cooks and does the dishes. This morning when I went to the breakfast buffet at the hotel I am staying at, I was a little <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/buffet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16521 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/buffet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/buffet.jpg 213w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/buffet-150x118.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a>overwhelmed. I walked from table to table, area to area scoping out what delicious morsels were prepared for me. Knowing that I am here for a week, gave me comfort to know that I did not need to experience everything at one time. I could try out a little here and there and know that tomorrow was a new day with new choices. Religious plurality and a breakfast buffet have a lot in common; you can take a little from each area and not fully commit to any one thing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Author William Cavanaugh, in <em>Being Consumed: Economics and Christian Desire<\/em>, says, \u201cThere is pluralism in the body: some are eyes, some are hands, some are feet. And yet precisely because of that differentiation, all are needed.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref\">[1]<\/a> Differences were created within us and ultimately when we express ourselves e<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/poep-pl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16524 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/poep-pl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/poep-pl.jpg 195w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/poep-pl-150x118.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><\/a>ven in worship, those differences come out. Plurality, whether ethnically, religiously, nationally or sociologically, tend to divide rather than unite. How we react to the differences colors our responses and the relationships that come out of those interactions. \u201cThe key question in every transaction is whether or not the transaction contributes to the flourishing of each person involved, and this question can only be judged, from a theological point of view, according to the end of human life, which is participation in the life of God.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref\">[2]<\/a> If how we interact with the world is a theological interaction, then what we buy reflects our understanding of the god we serve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As one that lives in a world of commodities we are forced to make choices in purchasing items our families need. These choices then reflect our convictions (or lack of) concerning how a product gets from the manufacturer to our home.\u00a0\u00a0 I have a daughter in college that goes out of her way to buy \u201cfair-trade\u201d items; whether it is coffee or sweatshirts. She recently told me she bought an article of clothing and how much she spent and I responded, \u201cwow, that is a lot\u201d. She responded, \u201cit&#8217;s fair trade and we are giving back.\u201d I too get caught up in the \u201ccheaper is better\u201d hype and realize the marketing I unintentionally consume affects my way of thinking.\u00a0\u00a0 We want (and demand) a smorgasbord of choices that we are entitled to. Miller says that we do not want to know where our products come from because it would bring more accountability.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref\">[3]<\/a> In an age where our clothing represents a world traveling experience, it is easier to be detached from the factories, sellers and even a physical store now that amazon is around. In first world countries, our wants influence our decisions and the pursuits we focus on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/bahai.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16522 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/bahai-300x75.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/bahai-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/bahai-150x38.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/bahai.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Religious plurality, according to Cavanaugh (and Surin) are linked to globalization.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref\">[4]<\/a> We have become so used to choices that it influences our faith. When we lived in Beijing, there were two other foreign families that lived in our apartment complex. The said they were Baha&#8217;i. I originally thought that was a particular people group but learned quickly that it was a fast growi<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16520 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl.jpg 280w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl-150x161.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a>ng religion. The founder of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed Faith, says: \u201cThe foundation of the religion of God is one\u201d because \u201c[t]he divine religion is reality, and reality is not multiple; it is one.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref\">[5]<\/a> For the Baha&#8217;i, literally all paths lead to the divine. A girl said, after spending time in Korea, that she had found her faith. She said that she was Baha&#8217;i and felt the most comfortable there because there was not all the restrictions that her methodist upbringing had. She did express that it wasn&#8217;t perfect because she was having sex with her boyfriend and Baha&#8217;i was opposed to that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Religious pluralism seems to be about finding what works for each individual and leaving the rest behind. William L. Rowe, pr<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16523 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl2-300x111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"86\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl2-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl2-150x56.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pl2.jpg 416w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a>ofessor of philosophy at Purdue University, observes: \u201cPerhaps the most natural position for a believer in a particular religion to take is that the truth lies with his or her own religion and that any religion holding opposing views is, therefore, false.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref\">[6]<\/a> The insatiable desire for the pursuit of things matches our faith and lifestyle. Baha\u2019i&#8217;s are pluralists\u2014in fact, they go beyond religious pluralism. \u201cThe divine religions must be the cause of oneness among men, and the means of unity and love; they must promulgate universal peace, free man from every prejudice, bestow joy and gladness, exercise kindness to all men and do away with every difference and distinction. \u2013\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 Baha&#8217;ist believe that all religions are equally authentic, true, and vital to the well-being of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The villain in <em>The Incredibles<\/em> movie says, \u201cIf everyone is super, then no one is super\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref\">[8]<\/a>. It makes me think that if everything is the truth then nothing is the truth. The feeding trough of the religious buffet does not provide the long lasting fulfillment and true peace that comes from kno<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/truth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16526 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/truth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"124\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/truth.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/truth-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/a>wing a God that we did not create ourselves. \u201cIf God is God, then God must be always beyond our comprehension. We are, nevertheless, less, invited to participate in the Trinitarian life through Christ and the work of the Spirit. But in order to do so, we cannot grasp, we can only submit.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref\">[9]<\/a> I saw a T-shirt in China that said, \u201cI am the Way, the <strong>Turth<\/strong> and the Life\u201d. After taking a photo with the young man, I thought how often do we misspell truth (purposefully or not) to fit our daily desired consumption of God?
