{"id":14697,"date":"2017-10-19T20:44:41","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T03:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/?p=14697"},"modified":"2017-10-19T20:54:31","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T03:54:31","slug":"i-found-the-golden-nugget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/i-found-the-golden-nugget\/","title":{"rendered":"I found the Golden Nugget"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gold-nugget-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14700\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dminlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gold-nugget-2-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gold-nugget-2-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gold-nugget-2-150x119.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gold-nugget-2.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s been a surreal week as the Elite 8 cohort has struggled to read and respond to Derek Rowntree\u2019s <em>Learn How to Study: Developing the study skills and approaches to learning that will help you succeed in university<\/em>.\u00a0 While I couldn\u2019t locate but one insignificant review on this book, I jumped in to the reading in true Adler and Van Doren style.\u00a0 I implemented my level 2, 3, and 4 reading techniques<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> and &#8211; low and behold &#8211; found my golden nugget in \u201cThe Hidden Curriculum\u201d.\u00a0 What is the hidden curriculum?\u00a0 According to Rowntree, \u201cThe hidden curriculum is what you have to satisfy in order to survive and prosper in your situation.\u00a0 It may include such qualities as punctuality at classes and speaking differently to different tutors.\u00a0 It may include reading a wider range of material than appears to be required for the course.\u00a0 It will almost certainly be reflected in what tutors are truly looking for in your work.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><em><sup><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/sup><\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Working in higher education, I immediately started to evaluate my own duplicity in a hidden curriculum &#8211; Do I have a hidden curriculum in my courses?\u00a0 Does the university have a hidden curriculum?\u00a0 And the most disturbing question \u2013 have I hindered a student\u2019s success by hidden norms, hidden rules, and hidden expectations?\u00a0 (To be honest I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve answered these questions for myself yet, but I\u2019m acutely aware that I need to review and evaluate my courses and interactions with students).\u00a0 I appreciate Rowntree\u2019s idealism surrounding critical thinking \u201cSuch a reflective, questioning approach, once you get used to it, should be yours for life.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0 My personal reflection and questioning on this topic led me to do significant searching\/reading on the term \u201chidden curriculum\u201d and boy is there a lot of material out there!\u00a0 The truth is, hidden curriculum is larger than just punctuality and reading material \u2013 hidden curriculum \u201cconsists of the \u201cnorms, values, and expectations\u201d that govern interactions among students, faculty, staff and administrators. To excel in college, at-risk students must navigate a world of new social norms \u2013 typically those of the white middle class, she argues\u201d.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0 And then it hit me \u2013 hidden curriculum is just another form of oppression.\u00a0 It\u2019s more than course policies and assessments.\u00a0 It\u2019s more than changing my teaching approach to a flipped classroom.\u00a0 It\u2019s more than implementing competency based education.\u00a0 It\u2019s changing the <em>culture<\/em> of higher education.\u00a0 While the solutions are complex, Taylor identifies three focus areas in addressing culture:\u00a0 language as a medium, space as a medium, and structure as a medium.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Speaking of evaluating culture, isn\u2019t that what this Leadership and Global Perspectives Program is all about?\u00a0 Maybe we\u2019ll have the perfect solution(s) by the time we achieve our DMin!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure how you\u2019ll feel about this &#8211; but let\u2019s be honest \u2013 there is certainly a \u201chidden curriculum\u201d in church. \u00a0John Ortberg\u2019s article in <em>Christianity Today <\/em>asks \u201cWhat do people learn from you about the Christian life? Sometimes it&#8217;s what you never intended to teach.\u201d\u00a0 He goes on to say, \u201cBut we have a hidden curriculum. Who gets fawned over, and who gets ignored? How do the staff and leaders get along when they&#8217;re off the platform and think nobody&#8217;s looking? How does a small group respond when someone shares a problem that is untidy and unresolved? Do leaders respond with panic or irritation or confidence or gentleness when a problem strikes? When there is a conflict, do people face it head on or go into avoidance mode? Does the church staff run on fear?\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>\u00a0 I think I can safely say we\u2019ve all either played a role, and\/or been a victim of a hidden curriculum.\u00a0 And this is why Christians are frequently labeled hypocrites.\u00a0 Why is it so pervasive in the Christian church?\u00a0 Especially in a community committed to learning and emulating Jesus, the greatest teacher of all time.\u00a0 It\u2019s sobering to think our churches are participating in oppression.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of oppression, Erin Lord Kunz, guest contributor to feminismandreligion.com with her article <em>The Hidden Curriculum in Evangelism: Patriarchy, <\/em>identifies patriarchy as the \u201cleftover from conservative America that remains\u201d.\u00a0 Whether patriarchy is \u201chidden curriculum\u201d may be questioned by some (only in that it feels quite overt if you\u2019re a woman).\u00a0 A point of clarification \u2013 Erin is not referring just to men taking leadership roles, she is more concerned with women being \u201csubordinated and oppressed both knowingly and unknowingly\u201d. <a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 This includes economics, politics, and cultural discourse.<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a>\u00a0 She does make a compelling argument with the following statement \u201cUntil Christian Evangelists legitimately let go of all the privileges white, middle-class patriarchy has granted them for so many years, Christianity is going to be massively unappealing to anyone who isn\u2019t white, middle-class, and male.\u201d \u00a0What a powerful statement and a challenging concept.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are you willing to do?\u00a0 Will you evaluate your professional\/personal world to seek out hidden curriculum? \u00a0Are we willing to accept the probability that it likely exists in some way, somewhere?\u00a0 Perhaps the biggest challenge is that our hidden curriculum is so hidden it will take significant searching, reflection, and evaluating to locate it.\u00a0 I implore you to take the risk \u2013 \u201cseek and you will find\u201d.\u00a0 Can you believe it?\u00a0 I truly believe I found a golden nugget in Rowntree\u2019s <em>Learn How to Study.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/How-Read-Book-Intelligent-Touchstone\/dp\/0671212095<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Derek Rowntree.\u00a0<em>Learn How to Study: Developing the study skills and approaches to learning that will help you succeed in university: A virtual tutorial with Professor Derek Rowntree<\/em>.
