{"id":1150,"date":"2012-09-13T06:25:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T06:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/intellectual-empathy-a-goat-herder-and-an-atheist\/"},"modified":"2012-09-13T06:25:00","modified_gmt":"2012-09-13T06:25:00","slug":"intellectual-empathy-a-goat-herder-and-an-atheist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/intellectual-empathy-a-goat-herder-and-an-atheist\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cintellectual empathy, a goat herder, and an atheist\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The concept of \u201cintellectual empathy,\u201d when critically thinking about critical thinking, intrigues me.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Dr. Richard Paul and Dr. Linda Elder, in <u>The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking: Concepts and Tools<\/u> under \u201cEssential Intellectual Traits,\u201d state \u201cHaving a consciousness of the need to imaginatively put oneself in the place of others in order to genuinely understand them, which requires the consciousness of our egocentric tendency to identify truth with our immediate perceptions of long-standing thought or belief.\u201d Basically, this trait requires that we \u201cput ourselves in another\u2019s shoes\u201d in order to remove the egocentric nature of our thinking.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The concept of empathy doesn\u2019t always seem a natural part of intellectual thinking, but I agree with Paul and Elder that it is essential to critical thinking.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This week I was watching a debate on television between two atheists on one side and a Christian and Jewish rabbi on the other side.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>A statement that one of the atheist debaters gave in his final argument disturbed me.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Basically, he alluded to the idea that most of what we have in the monotheistic religious traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam came from a \u201cgoat herder.\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I found this statement, although possibly true, to be completely arrogant.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>A goat herder has knowledge that he will never have, and, I would postulate, even critical thinking skills that he will never have.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Why?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Because it seems the atheist man has not done the humble and important work of enacting \u201cintellectual empathy\u201d in this situation.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He thinks that his knowledge and critical thinking skills are beyond those of the goat herder.
