Grenz and Olson, in their book \u201cWho Needs Theology?\u201d introduce arguments for studying theology.\u00a0 <\/span>They also present some of the arguments that have been used against theology, such as the \u201cKilljoy Objection.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The authors present a scale from Folk Theology to Academic Theology and discuss the theologies in between these extremes; as well the intricacies of dogma, doctrine and opinion. They cite valuable historical information and include humor from Peanuts\u2019 comics.\u00a0 <\/span>Overall, I enjoyed this written discussion of theology.<\/span><\/p>\n

While reading I kept returning to a concept I have taught in my own religious studies classes.\u00a0 <\/span>It is what I call the \u201cPixel vs. Picture\u201d concept.\u00a0 <\/span>I will explain this in a moment. I also thought about a quote by the astronomer, Carl Sagan, which says, \u201cThe beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it but the way those atoms are put together.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>In a way, this is what theology does.\u00a0 <\/span>It looks at the \u201catoms\u201d of dogma, doctrine and opinion, adds in a little historical context, and engages the essence of God.\u00a0 <\/span>It is not just an exercise of knowledge but also a practice.\u00a0 <\/span>The physicist Richard Feynman, commenting on the \u201cnature of nature\u201d says, \u201c\u2026you\u2019ve got to stop and think about it, about the complexity to really get the pleasure.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Why am I using scientists\u2019 quotes to describe theology?\u00a0 <\/span>I really don\u2019t know.\u00a0 <\/span>These quotes just came to mind.\u00a0 <\/span>But I think they help explain theology.\u00a0 <\/span>There is pleasure in the complexity of the study of God.\u00a0 <\/span>Not only is study inherently pleasurable, but the results can be as well.\u00a0 <\/span>As I told one of my students, who told me he felt guilty for questioning his faith, \u201cGod gave us a brain.\u00a0 <\/span>It honors God for us to use it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It is natural for us to ask questions.\u00a0 <\/span>My four year old nephew is learning about space and planets.\u00a0 <\/span>He recently asked his Mom if there was a God for each planet.\u00a0 <\/span>Wow!\u00a0 <\/span>He is already a theologian.\u00a0 <\/span>He is asking about the details.\u00a0 <\/span>He is curious about the pixels within the picture.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cPixels vs. Picture\u201d concept is a framework for analysis.\u00a0 <\/span>The pixels are the details.\u00a0 <\/span>For example, let\u2019s apply this concept to \u201cThe Creation of Adam\u201d found in the Sistine Chapel.\u00a0 <\/span>The \u201cpixels\u201d include the unique colors, the style, the time period, the historical significance, the theology detailed in images, and the brushstrokes of Michelangelo.\u00a0 <\/span>The picture is \u201cthe big picture.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>It includes the experience one has when looking at this majestic fresco.\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t require explanation; it just is<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/span>And by being itself alone, it can inspire a moving experience for the viewer.\u00a0 <\/span>The \u201cpixels\u201d of theology help us experience the \u201cpicture.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>There is beauty in the details; and yet the beauty exists without analysis.\u00a0 <\/span>God is.\u00a0 <\/span>Theology takes this statement and allows humans to practice their natural tendency of curiosity – \u00a0<\/span>the hows, the whys, the what ifs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theology gives us the pixels of a glorious life in which we can \u201clive, move and have our being\u201d in God.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
