{"id":1082,"date":"2012-10-17T19:26:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-17T19:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/kfc-fanta-and-the-bbc\/"},"modified":"2012-10-17T19:26:00","modified_gmt":"2012-10-17T19:26:00","slug":"kfc-fanta-and-the-bbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/kfc-fanta-and-the-bbc\/","title":{"rendered":"KFC, Fanta and the BBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>KFC, Fanta and the BBC <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If you travel, you know what I\u2019m talking about!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I can be pretty certain that whenever I spend the night in a hotel, anywhere in the world, I know that the one English language station on the television will be the British Broadcasting Company \u2013 or BBC.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I am able to catch up on the \u201cPremier League\u2019s\u201d soccer scores and learn the latest about the queen and the monarchy and in a strange way, I feel safe and connected to the broader world.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The hotel electricity might go off, but when it is restored, the BBC is still there!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And when it\u2019s time to splurge, I can be pretty certain that there will be bottles of Orange Fanta!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, there is Coke in most countries but for some reason, orange Fanta is ubiquitous around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I too, can be pretty certain that there will be Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants on many world-wide street corners, with McDonalds across the street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Globalization astounds!<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The world is changing &#8211; some ways for the good and some for the bad \u2013 but this era of travel and communication has changed forever the way we look at each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In <em>The Handbook of Leadership Theory and Practice<\/em> edited by Nohria and Khurana, we learn that \u201cthe cultural values of a country will determine the optimum leadership profile for that country.\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, we lead in a manner consistent with the values of our home country, which can lead to problems when trying to work and communicate cross-culturally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I saw this happen recently.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>An organization from the US wanted a group of churches to declare what side they were on, regarding an administrative situation.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The heavy-handed US representative stated in the American \u201cspeak the truth \u2013 get it out in the open\u201d way that it was this way or that way, and they had to decide this moment,\u201csign on the line or you are out!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The result of course was disastrous.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The \u201csave face\u201d culture of these Asian leaders couldn\u2019t understand the American\u2019s insistence.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Because of the US leader\u2019s inability in understanding how to negotiate with other cultures, \u201cthat the cultural values of a country will determine how the leader acts and processes information,\u201d an impasse occurred hurting both sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When on a mission trip or the next time you work with refugees or host a foreign exchange student, remember that what works in the US doesn\u2019t always work with people from other cultures or in other places around the world.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Understanding of faith, family and responsibility are different.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Not better or worse \u2013 just different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Globalization, as the stated book points out, brings people to the false understanding that they think they understand, when in reality, there are still culturally miles \u2013 or should I say kilometers \u2013 apart!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So when you are in Korea and you can\u2019t stand another meal of \u201cKimchi,\u201d it\u2019s OK to find the nearest KFC, sit down with a Fanta and watch BBC on the wall TV.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Just remember that we are the guests and that God can use us as long as we understand that \u201cour way\u201d is just one of many!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KFC, Fanta and the BBC If you travel, you know what I\u2019m talking about!
