{"id":1066,"date":"2012-10-25T11:18:25","date_gmt":"2012-10-25T11:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/one-ice-cube-please\/"},"modified":"2012-10-25T11:18:25","modified_gmt":"2012-10-25T11:18:25","slug":"one-ice-cube-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/one-ice-cube-please\/","title":{"rendered":"One Ice-Cube Please"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>One ice-cube please<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The flight attendant had that tired smile on her face &#8211; the one that is forced after about eight hours on a packed plane.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The Brussels Airliner was almost to Burundi and the last drinks were being served before landing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;I&#8217;ll take a Coke, please,&#8221; I requested.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;Do you want ice?&#8221; she asked.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;That would be great,&#8221; I thought.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I knew that for the next week, I would be in Africa.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There would be no drinks with ice &#8211; this will be my last treat! <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Coke was poured, and then, ceremoniously, she took her baby tongs and extracted one &#8211; only one &#8211; tiny ice-cube and plopped it in my drink.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Inwardly I smiled as I took the drink.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>These are the little things that remind me when traveling, that I&#8217;m not in the states anymore! <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sometimes we understand Christ&#8217;s message in a similar way &#8211; we settle for one ice-cube, served with baby tongs.<span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Our lives are lived in frustration, trying to appear like we&#8217;ve got it all together. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We constantly work to win God&#8217;s approval. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We fear tough questions about faith, and can&#8217;t open up to others about our doubts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jesus talked about abundant life and modeled grace, forgiveness, acceptance.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He says that He is the giver of second chances.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He speaks off purpose through service.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He says we should love others so that we can love ourselves.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When I think about those things, I have hope, in good times and in bad, even in this globalized world of change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In <em>Handbook for Leadership Theory and Practice<\/em>, Rosabeth Kanter suggests that with Globalization there are three tasks to address: deal with uncertainty, deal with complexity and deal with diversity.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">To relieve these tensions of living in a world of uncertainty and rapid change \u2013 <em>when we don\u2019t get the number of ice-cubes we want<\/em> \u2013 it\u2019s imperative that we concentrate on two leadership dimensions that will be true in any culture and in any setting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span>\u00b7<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>First, a \u201cgood leader will inspire and instill confidence in their followers, in advance of the results or the victory.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span>\u00b7<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Second, a good leader \u201cwill set standards for what is good conduct.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In short, he or she will possess integrity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">These are two imperatives that span culture, change, complexity and diversity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I don&#8217;t want to be one to live life in fear and uncertainty.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I want more than just one ice-cube.<span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I want a glass full of ice, living life to the fullest, with all of its hurts, joys, doubts and grace &#8211; modeling this existence not after the latest TV evangelist, or Christian book, but after Jesus Himself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One ice-cube please The flight attendant had that tired smile on her face &#8211; the one that is forced after about eight hours on a packed plane.\u00a0 The Brussels Airliner was almost to Burundi and the last drinks were being served before landing. &#8220;I&#8217;ll take a Coke, please,&#8221; I requested.\u00a0 &#8220;Do you want ice?&#8221; she [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":47,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[2,195],"class_list":["post-1066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-dminlgp","tag-nohria","cohort-lgp3"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1066","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/47"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1066"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1066\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1066"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1066"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1066"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
