Worship with Passion

Recently my friends and I had the opportunity to see Kristian Stanfill and the Passion Worship Band perform on campus. Passion is a band, and also a conference, that travels around the country, encouraging student through worship and prayer. We were lucky enough to have them stop by George Fox and share in a night filled with music, dancing and prayer.

The night really began when the band started playing, lights began to flash, and students rushed to the front of the stage to dance and worship. The music was great and it was fun to see not only Fox students, but also other members of the Newberg community worshiping together. It was an awesome night shared among classmates and friends.

Spring Retreat 2013: Zip lines, huge swings and worship

This spring retreat was held at Trout Creek Bible Camp in Corbett, Oregon. We arrived around 7 p.m. on Friday night and were greeted by a beautiful starry sky and tall pine tress all around. I went up with a small group of four friends and we arrived before everyone else.

Finding my voice – with a little help

Nationally known musician Aaron Strumpel joined George Fox during the fall 2012 semester as artist in residence. He offered guidance and inspiration for various student music ensembles, including the chapel band and Shalom worship team, but also spent a good deal of time working one-on-one with students. Below sophomore Shekinah Davis recalls her experience with Aaron.

It was the first Shalom gathering of the semester when Aaron Strumpel announced that he would be leading a singer-songwriter class. At first I felt a little nervous about joining because I don’t often sing in front of people. The last time I performed for an audience was for a talent show in high school that didn’t go so well. I thought, ‘If singing in front of my high school friends was nerve-racking, just think about trying to sing in front of Aaron, who is such an amazing worship leader and musician.’

Imported from Vienna, Austria, the Bösendorfer “Imperial” grand piano has been called the “Rolls-Royce of pianos,” and for good reason – it costs about as much as a small house. Since September of 2005, its permanent home has been Bauman Auditorium on the George Fox University campus. It is the only concert grand piano in the world with 97 keys – including nine extra sub-bass notes – and the extra strings and length give the instrument additional resonance and richness. To put it simply, the Bösendorfer is far from your average piano.

The ’80s Dance is the first dance that George Fox holds every school year, and is in my opinion the greatest event of the year. As with most dances, most of the fun is getting ready for the event.

In years past, my friends and I have headed to the Value Village in Tigard to find some ridiculous 1980s garb. Last year, I found the perfect ensemble of fake snakeskin pants, a snake print T-shirt and a cheesy leather vest to round out the look for the night. This year, being on a budget, I decided to forgo the quest for a new outfit and resorted to combining my favorite ’80s gear from past years, with a few additional items borrowed from friends to achieve the perfect ’80s outfit. After piling on layers of eye shadow and blush, and using half a can of hair spray, we were finally ready for the night.

Photo & Video from the Choir’s Trip to New York to Sing at 9/11 Memorial

Last weekend the George Fox University Concert Choir traveled to New York City to sing at “A Concert of Commemoration,” a memorial event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The choir received an invitation to participate after event organizers saw a video of the choir singing Kyrie, a portion of Rene Clausen’s Memorial, on YouTube. While photography or video wasn’t allowed at the concert, which took place Sunday at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Avery Fisher Hall, we were able to capture a few of the sights and sounds from the weekend.

Friday Night in the Foxhole

Lucas Tomlinson and his band, "Mariner," perform Friday night in the Foxhole.

On Friday night, the Foxhole was the place to be. Students crowded into the popular on-campus hangout spot to watch their fellow classmates perform. Lucas Tomlinson, a senior Christian Ministries major, and his band, “Mariner,” were the third act to perform. Here’s a video and an interview with Lucas and band member Morgan Davie, a senior Studio Arts major.

There are a lot of perks to being a part of a small college. For example, at George Fox we only have one cafeteria, and that fits everyone just fine.

When you have a fairly small student body (1,800 undergrad students), your whole school can attend the same dance. Freshman and seniors, blowing up the same dance floor. Gotta love it!
