A Day in the Life of Abbie Bergerson

Off

7 a.m. –  Junior Abbie Bergerson, a pitcher on the softball team, slowly rolls out of bed after hitting the snooze on her third alarm of the morning. It was too early, and she was still tired from a long day of practice and classes the day before. Time to do it all over again. She gets ready as quietly as possible and tries not to wake her roommates, Amber and Andrea, who have a later start to their day.

Abbie puts on her yoga pants, tennis shoes and a zip-up jacket. She makes herself some coffee, nothing too fancy, with just the right amount of cream to give it some flavor. Knowing she needs some for the road, Abbie fills up a mason jar with more coffee, gathers her things, and heads out the door. She’s ready to tackle the day.

7:52 a.m. – Before making her two-minute drive to campus, Abbie turns on her favorite tunes by Keith Urban. She then leaves the driveway in her Subaru.

9 a.m. – Back at home after her morning Environmental Systems class, she makes herself some eggs with an English muffin.

10 a.m. – Mondays are busy for Abbie, but that’s not out of the ordinary since she’s a student-athlete and business major. Today she got to take a few “breaks,” which involved more homework than relaxation. But, there were a couple of opportunities for Abbie to watch softball games of rival schools in her division, to compare stats and prepare for upcoming matches.

11:30 a.m. – Abbie gathers some fruits and veggies, and blends her favorite smoothie for lunch.

Noon – After lunch, she gets to relax a little and grabs her laptop to watch a quick episode of Bones before getting ready for practice and heading back to campus for classes.

12:30 p.m. – Time to get ready for practice! Abbie puts on her George Fox softball T-shirt, Under Armour if it’s cold, softball pants, socks and tennis shoes, and packs her cleats for when she’s on the field.

12:45 p.m. – Dressed and ready for practice later that afternoon, Abbie leaves again in her Subaru and heads back to campus for her statistics and global business classes.

3 p.m. – After classes wrap up, she grabs her gear and runs over to the field for her favorite part of the day. Even if the rainy Oregon weather puts a damper on things, she still loves it. At practice, Coach Jessica Hollen decides to have players work on team and individual defense. For a pitcher like Abbie, this means she’s spending time in the pitching bullpen.

5 p.m. – Practice may be over, but the work still continues. Abbie and the team head to the weight room for their weight-room regimen. Today the pitchers work on cardio, abs and squats, and follow it up with their assigned weights exercises for the day.

6:15 p.m. – Finished with practice and workouts, Abbie drives home, showers and changes, and makes spaghetti for dinner. Monday nights mean she gets to head back to campus yet again. She’s a leader for the Fellowship Christian Athletes, which meets at 8:30 p.m., but before she leaves, she gets some snacks ready for the meeting.

8:15 p.m. – Abbie drives back to campus and heads to the FCA meeting at the Foxhole.

8:30 p.m. – For the rest of the night she helps organize games until everyone breaks into small groups. Then the guest speaker shares his life story and gives a message. Though FCA is mostly athletes, Abbie and the rest of the leaders love to invite anyone interested in attending, whether or not they play a sport at George Fox.

9:45 p.m. – Abbie helps clean up, and then finally heads home.

10 p.m. – After she gets ready for bed, Abbie winds down by watching Netflix, checking her phone, texting her boyfriend, and setting her alarms for the morning.

10:30 p.m. – Asleep at last! Though her days as a student-athlete can be stressful and full of responsibilities, Abbie loves every part of her George Fox experience and wouldn’t have it any other way.
