Record number of students enroll at George Fox University this fall

NEWBERG, Ore. – A record number of incoming undergraduates spurred George Fox University to new heights this fall, as an unprecedented 3,700-plus enrolled at the university to break the previous enrollment record by more than 200 students.
A total of 3,712 students – including 771 new traditional undergraduates – enrolled in the private Newberg, Ore., school this fall, eclipsing the previous enrollment record of 3,519, established in 2011. It also marked a 6.3-percent increase over its 2012 figure of 3,491. The school is now the second-largest private institution in Oregon.
The bulk of the growth can be attributed to the fact George Fox saw a 33.6-percent increase in its new undergraduates population. Among them are a record 605 first-year freshmen and 127 transfer students. The school also enjoyed strong retention numbers, with a freshman-to-sophomore retention rate that exceeded 80 percent, and continued a trend of enrolling more students from diverse racial and economic backgrounds.
In fact, of the 605 first-time freshmen who enrolled, 25.7 percent identified themselves as ethnic minorities. As part of the initiative to encourage more diversity, the school annually welcomes between 30 and 40 new Chinese students to campus.
Overall, the university welcomed 2,115 undergraduate students, marking an 11 percent increase over a year ago, and another 269 to its adult degree programs. At the graduate level, George Fox enrolled 1,328 students.
George Fox’s overall enrollment has increased six-fold since 1986, when 549 students attended the school. To further put this year’s numbers in perspective, in 1987 the school’s total enrollment was 705 students. Today, its incoming undergraduate student number of 771 is nearly 10 percent higher than the total enrollment was 26 years ago.
Looking ahead, undergraduate students interested in enrolling at George Fox for the 2014-15 academic year are encouraged to apply early. The university’s early action application deadline is Nov. 15. Those who apply by that date will not be charged the $40 application fee and are eligible to participate in the university’s scholarship competition Jan. 31-Feb. 1 or Feb. 7-8, 2014. The school’s regular decision deadline for incoming freshmen is Feb. 1 (March 1 for transfers).
