NEWBERG, Ore. – Ashley Covey rebounded her own shot and stuck it in the goal for the only score of the game five minutes into the first half, and the Linfield College Wildcats made it stand up for a 1-0 win over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference women’s soccer game Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.
Chelsey Stoltz lofted a corner kick from the right into the middle for Covey, whose header was stopped by Bruin keeper Jessica Cardwell but not controlled. Covey then had an easy tap into the net for her 3rd goal of the season at the 4:32 mark.
The Linfield defense then took over, limiting the Bruins to 11 shots in the game and five on goal, all saved by Allison Cartmill. Cardwell kept the Bruins close by saving 13 shots on goal out of19 total shots for the Wildcats.
The close score was the Bruins’ ninth game out of 10 this season decided by a single goal. George Fox has played five 1-0 games, winning two, and four 2-1 games, winning one.
Both teams are back in action Saturday at 12:00 noon. George Fox (3-7, 1-6) hosts 9th-ranked and league-leading University of Puget Sound, while Linfield (4-5-2, NWC 2-4-1) returns home to entertain Pacific Lutheran University.
