The multi-use facility is latest venture in extensive relationship between the university and the Chehalem Park and Recreation District

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox University’s plans to build the Austin Sports Complex – a multi-use sports facility to be shared by the university, the Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Newberg High School and the community – would continue a partnership between George Fox and the CPRD that is already extensive.

The district currently uses several George Fox facilities while the university utilizes the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course for its home men’s and women’s golf matches. Plans are also in place for George Fox to use the district’s aquatic center after a future launch of an intercollegiate swimming program.

The CPRD, in turn, conducts the following activities on the George Fox campus:

•	“Junior Tiger” youth basketball camps
•	CPRD youth basketball camp, run by George Fox men’s basketball coach Mark Sundquist
•	Softball tournaments on Morse softball field
•	CPRD adult open tennis evening on tennis courts
•	Middle school cross country practices in the fall
•	Football conditioning camp in summer in Wheeler Sports Center

Once completed, the Austin Sports Complex will include a multi-use synthetic turf field, a synthetic turf soccer field, an athletic center building, three grass fields, and a walking/jogging path.

Phase I of the $6.5 million project was launched on July 9, 2009, with the announcement of a $1.2 million lead gift from Brad and Katharine Stoffer and their Boedecker Foundation. The first phase calls for the development of 11 of the 24 acres of land through construction of the synthetic turf soccer field, the multi-use synthetic turf field, and the athletic center building. A $250,000 match is currently under way.

George Fox is partnering with CPRD to develop the remaining 13 acres in phase II of the project, which will include the installation of the three grass fields.

The complex is being developed on 24 acres of land donated to the university by Newberg philanthropists Ken and Joan Austin. The property is located north of the George Fox campus, on the corner of Crestview and Villa roads in Newberg.

University President Robin Baker said the institution hopes to start construction on the first of two turf fields in March 2010, enabling soccer to be played on the new field as early as next fall.

George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as one of the top 100 colleges in the country and highest among Christian colleges.

More than $1.3 million has been raised for project to benefit university, community

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox University received confirmation in October of a $250,000 matching grant designated for the Austin Sports Complex, a multi-use sports facility to be shared by the university, the Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Newberg High School, local club teams and the community.

The grant, from an anonymous Newberg family, will match dollar for dollar raised – up to $250,000 – toward the new sports complex. The university will use the gift to seek individual gifts and pledges not to exceed $25,000 each and must meet the match by July 1, 2010.

The gift to the campaign has resulted in more than $1.3 million raised to date toward the project’s $6.5 million goal.

“We are thrilled with this generous opportunity to match gifts from donors,” said Gordon Crisman, who took over as chairman of the university’s board of trustees in October, replacing five-year chairperson Barbara Palmer. “This will allow us to start work on the athletic fields next spring.”

Once completed, the Austin Sports Complex will include a multi-use synthetic turf field, a synthetic turf soccer field, an athletic center building, three grass fields, and a walking/jogging path.

Phase I of the project was launched on July 9, 2009, with the announcement of a $1.2 million lead gift from Brad and Katharine Stoffer and their Boedecker Foundation.
University President Robin Baker said the institution hopes to start construction on the first of two turf fields in March 2010, enabling soccer to be played on the new field as early as next fall.

The $250,000 match represents the second significant gift received for the campaign. “The anonymous couple is excited to know that the Sports Complex will benefit the entire community and hopes their gift will attract a broad base of support from the community,” said Shari Scales, the university’s vice president of advancement.

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox University will honor its 2008-09 national-champion women’s basketball team with a championship banner-raising ceremony before the team’s home opener against Concordia on Friday, Nov. 20.

The ceremony is scheduled for 5:45 p.m., with the game set to tip off at 6 p.m. in the university’s Wheeler Sports Center on the Newberg, Ore., campus. The game will be followed by the men’s home opener against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 8 p.m.

The event commemorates the Bruins’ surprising 2008-09 season, when they posted a perfect 32-0 record despite returning just one senior and bringing in 10 freshmen. George Fox clinched the Division III title with a 60-53 defeat of Washington University of St. Louis in the finals, contested on the campus of Hope University in Holland, Mich., in March.

After the season, head coach Scott Rueck was named Division III National Coach of the Year, senior Kristen Shielee was chosen the Final Four’s most valuable player, and freshman Sage Indendi was chosen National Rookie of the Year.

The Bruins open defense of their title with a 5:30 p.m. away game at Corban on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Tickets for the Nov. 20 game are available at the door for $5 (adults), $3 for non-George Fox students and $1 for seniors (55 and older) and children 12 and under.
