The internet and the election

Here are some interesting statistics from the Pew Internet & American Life Project on the 2008 election and internet usage.

  • 46% of Americans have used the internet, email or cell phone text messaging to get news about the campaign, share their views and mobilize others
  • 35% say they have watched online political videos, that’s 3x’s as many as the 2004 election
  • 10% use social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace) to get information or be involved
  • 6% have made monetary contributions online compared with 2% in 2004
  • 5% have posted their own original commentary or analysis
  • Obama’s supporters utilize the internet more for news and political activism than McCain’s supporters, 65% vs. 56%
