Centennial Tower

Perhaps the most distinctive landmark on campus is the Centennial Tower. The Centennial Tower, although most commonly referred to as the bell tower, was built in 1990 to commemorate the university’s 100 anniversary. Designed by internationally renowned architect Pietro Belluschi, the “Architect’s Architect”, who donated his services to the project. The funds for the project came from Esther Klages, who was one of the more noted donors to the university, having several locations named after her. The tower contains the original two hundred pound cast-iron Victory Bell.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE CENTENNIAL TOWER:

  • The Centennial Tower does not use the bells today, instead, it uses a pre-recorded soundtrack.
  • In addition to being the home for the Victory Bell, the Centennial Tower is also home to a Carillion as well as four separate clocks.
  • The tower itself cost $125,000 to build.
  • A time capsule was buried beneath the tower during the 100th anniversary.
