Peace Corps rep on campus tomorrow
It’s never too early to start thinking about Peace Corps service, a 27-month commitment following graduation. A Peace Corps rep, Scot Roskelley, will be on campus tomorrow (Wednesday) to conduct an info session at 4:10 p.m. in Stevens 207.
For those who can’t make it, he will also be available in Canyon Commons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is also scheduling one-on-one sessions with students that day (email him at sroskelley@peacecorps.gov to schedule).
Besides being a tremendous opportunity for service and self-growth, Peace Corps experience can help launch careers, too. For instance, people leave Peace Corps service with a letter of non-competitive eligibility for federal government jobs, which can be helpful when applying for jobs at places such as the National Institutes of Health, the Center for Disease Control, national parks, the Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, the Department of Energy’s research laboratories, etc.
In addition, more than 200 colleges and universities offer graduate school fellowships to returned Peace Corps volunteers. Because acceptance to the Peace Corps is competitive, Roskelley encourages students to talk to him as early in their college careers as possible, as there are things students can do to make them more competitive when they apply during their senior year.
The Peace Corps especially needs individuals with degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, health education, education, business, math, Spanish and French. People with farm and nursery experience are also in high demand.
