Do you know of students seeking housing this year?

Sunday, July 15th, 2018

Do you know of a George Fox undergraduate or grad student looking for a place to live this year? Friendship House Newberg might be the perfect house for them.

Located just 10 blocks from campus and newly remodeled, Friendship House’s vision is to create community within and in the greater George Fox and Newberg communities. Residents will have their own bedroom with a half bath, as well as a shared master bathroom, and a newly remodeled kitchen and living room. They’ll also have the opportunity to live life alongside two individuals with developmental disabilities who are engaged in the community and life of Newberg.

The vision of Friendship House is to build relationships and build bridges between individuals with disabilities and the community. Have students contact Sondra Strong at 503-201-8321 or fhnewberg@gmail.com to find out more.

Consider volunteering as a Life Group leader this fall

Thursday, July 12th, 2018

The Office for Spiritual and Intercultural Life is looking for post-college Life Group leaders for our eight-week fall Life Groups (the weeks of Sept. 17 through Nov. 5). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide. Groups are encouraged to use one of three curriculum options recommended by the Office for Spiritual and Intercultural Life that parallel other themes that are being explored in chapel.

We welcome our employees, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Our fall leader meeting will take place at a location to be determined on Thursday, Sept. 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

For more information and to sign up, visit this webpage or contact the Office for Spiritual and Intercultural Life at spirituallife@georgefox.edu.

Please avoid parking in Hoover and Stevens lots tomorrow

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018

The undergraduate admissions office is getting ready to welcome hundreds of prospective students to campus tomorrow (Friday) for Summer Visit Day. Please be considerate of our guests by avoiding parking in the Hoover and Stevens parking lots.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kelly Friesen at kfriesen@georgefox.edu or ext. 2248.

Important Fitness Center Information

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018

Only weeks remain before the opening of the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27, so that student staff can be adequately trained on the new equipment and protocols (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the current fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice that much of the older equipment has been moved out. Sometime in August, the large portion of the space will be remodeled for athletics’ use in light of the addition of women and men’s swimming and the continued growth in the number of student-athletes (currently 20 percent of our undergraduate student population). The smaller portion of the current facility (the free weight area) will be remodeled into a classroom during the fall semester.

Please note that because of remodeling and construction of new space, there will likely be a two- to three-week time frame in August when there will be no fitness center available for general campus use. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience for those who are regularly using this space and trust that the new space in the Hadlock Student Center will make it worth the wait!

Questions? Contact Brad Lau at blau@georgefox.edu.

Important Vehicle Registration Information for Fall 2018

Tuesday, July 10th, 2018

Students: Here is the vehicle registration information you’ve been waiting for! Registration will be rolled out like last year, with all commuters, graduate students and seniors beginning the process at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 16.

The portal will open for juniors desiring residential permits at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 23, and for sophomores desiring residential permits on Monday, July 30.

Residential permits are limited and are on a first-come, first-served basis for each class level, so please register during the week that corresponds to your class standing in the fall, as a permit cannot be guaranteed for late registrations..

Freshmen living on campus will need to submit an application for a parking permit, and preference will be given to those with documented medical or work-related needs. Permits for freshmen living on campus will be for the Austin lot, and are very limited. The application form will go live on July 1 on MyGFU on the vehicle registration portal and must be completed and submitted by July 31 in order to be considered.

More registration information is available on the Campus Public Safety website.

Questions? Call Campus Public Safety during business hours at 503-554-2090 or e-mail Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.

Be aware of statewide transit tax

Tuesday, July 10th, 2018

As of July 1, 2018, you’ll see a new item on your paystub for Oregon’s statewide transit tax. The tax is one-tenth of one percent (.001) — or $1 per $1,000. Your employer will be automatically withholding the tax – just like the personal income tax – so you don’t have to do or change anything. Unlike the personal income tax, there’s no withholding exemption for this tax.

Revenue from the statewide transit tax will go to expanding public transportation throughout Oregon. For more information on how the tax revenues will be used, check out “HB 2017 Funding Package” under “Projects & News” on the Oregon Department of Transportation’s website.

To learn more about the tax itself, visit the Department of Revenue online at oregon.gov/dor.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Kasondra Silva at ksilva@georgefox.edu.

Reminder: Be aware of upcoming vehicle registration dates this month

Tuesday, July 10th, 2018

With the new academic year comes changes in parking policies. This letter is to inform you of those changes ahead of time so you can act accordingly.

All changes mentioned in this communication begin with the 2018-19 academic year. The university, not Campus Public Safety (formerly Security Services), has elected to bill all commuters for your annual parking permit automatically.

Your student account will be charged each semester through Student Financial Services. Additionally, there is an increase in the cost of the parking permit: $100 per semester ($200 annually).

When you go online to register your vehicle on MYGFU, under “GFU Resources,” click on “Vehicle Registration.” There will be no cost shown, and you will enter your vehicle information.

Complete instructions on vehicle registration can be found on Campus Public Safety’s website. Once you have completed the vehicle registration process, your permit will be mailed to you in 14 to 21 days at the mailing address you provided during the vehicle registration process.

For those who live nearby and would rather walk or ride a bike to campus, an online form will be available to request a refund for the permit charge. Please read the form thoroughly to understand the conditions of your refund. Information on where to access this form will be announced in an upcoming Daily Bruin.

Those of you living in the Good Neighbor area, when you bring in the required proof of residence to receive your free parking permit, your information will be submitted to Student Financial Services for a refund of permit charges. Details about parking off-campus can be found on the Off-Campus Parking web page.

Please watch this summer for any changes regarding parking policies or permits. Check your George Fox email regularly or you might miss something important.

Dates to register your vehicle are the folowing:

  • Monday July 16, at 9 a.m.: Seniors, commuters, graduate programs
  • Monday July 23, at 9 a.m.: Juniors
  • Monday July 30, at 9 a.m.: Sophomores

If you have any questions, please call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090. Details about the university’s parking policies can be found on the Campus Public Safety website: Parking 101.
