Volunteers needed for nursing and social work’s poverty simulation event
The nursing and social work departments are looking for volunteers to participate in our poverty simulation on Wednesday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 12:45 to 3 p.m. in Canyon Commons. We would be thrilled if you would join us for one or both dates. If you would like to “job share,†we would be happy to accommodate this as well.
The poverty simulation is a required event for senior social work and nursing students and is dependent upon getting volunteers to help be part of “the community.†Essentially, you will be acting out the part of a business owner or agency member (such as a grocery store clerk, pawn shop owner, day care worker, unemployment officer, DMV employee, etc.). There is nothing you need to do to prepare. A packet will be given to you at the event (before students arrive) with all that you need to know about your part.
You will have the opportunity to watch the students as they assume the role of a family living in poverty and as they go through daily tasks with the added challenge of poverty. It is truly fascinating and eye-opening for all!
