Professor of church history Charlie Self speaks on campus Tuesday
The university community is invited to free presentations featuring Charlie Self, professor of church history at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, Mo., on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Self will speak twice on the Newberg campus. In the morning, he will present “Liberated for the Life in the World†in the 10:40 a.m. chapel service in Bauman Auditorium. In the evening, he will speak on “Flourishing Communities: New Synergies†at 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.
In the morning session, Self will address the question, “What is our salvation for?†He argues it is indeed for our eternal joy in Christ, but that it is also to bring God’s kingdom to our world as we share the words and works of Jesus. In the evening, he’ll discuss the question, “What happens when the church partners with business, charities, education, public agencies and cultural communities for the common good?†He will explore ways to connect our faith and work, our churches and communities, and our mission and the common good.
Self helps oversee major grants for the integration of faith, work and economics for the Kern Family Foundation. He is the author or coauthor of three books: The Divine Dance (2003), The Power of Faithful Focus (2004), and Flourishing Churches and Communities: A Pentecostal Primer on Faith, Work, and Economics (2013).
An ordained minister with the Assemblies of God, Self has spoken widely on the integration of faith, work and human flourishing. He is a senior advisor for the Acton Institute for Religion and Liberty.
