College of Christian Studies offers two unique courses this fall

Interested in taking a deeper look at the writings of Augustine or C.S. Lewis? The College of Christian Studies is offering two “special topic” courses this fall semester: RELI/PHIL 285/485, “Augustine of Hippo” and RELI 285, “Reading the Bible with C.S. Lewis.”

Taught by Joseph Clair, the Augustine course will move chronologically and thematically through Augustine’s life, exposing students to the questions and issues that preoccupied Augustine most: the relationship of Christianity and philosophy, faith and happiness; Christianity and the liberal arts; faith and reason; church and state; works and grace; matter and spirit; virtue and vice; war and peace – and more. Majors and non-majors are more than welcome! The course can be taken at the 285 or 485 level, with requirements varying accordingly. Please contact Joseph (jclair@georgefox.edu) with questions.

In the C.S. Lewis course, Roger Newell will focus on a wide selection of Lewis’s writings, including literary criticism, The Chronicles of Narnia, Miracles, and Reflections on the Psalms, with the goal of gaining maturity in reading the Bible through reading the Bible with C.S. Lewis. Using Lewis as a guide, the course will invite students to bring together interpretation and enjoyment, engaging in a conversation between academic and devotional reading. This course fulfills 3 hours of General Education Bible credit. Contact Roger (rnewell@georgefox.edu) with questions.
