Knowing God in Hard Times: Small Group

Are you interested in learning and growing with others as we seek to better understand how to relate to God in the midst of suffering, confusion, despair, grief?

You have the opportunity to be part of a small Bible study/spiritual formation group that will explore this topic. We will meet 6 times during the semester, for approximately one hour each time. All materials will be available at no cost. GFU seminary student Sierra Neiman will facilitate the group.

Four faculty share at ‘Coffee and Conversation’ on March 11

The fifth faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the year is titled “Grading as a Conversation: Using Assessment as a Part of Teaching.” Sharing their stories will be Dwight Kimberly, Mark Terry, Amy Dee and Mike Foster. Join us from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, in Hoover 104.

Spring Theological Conference runs next Monday through Wednesday

Next week, Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee will address issues related to technology in our lives when she comes to campus Monday through Wednesday, March 4-6, as guest speaker for the Spring Theological Conference.

The schedule for the week includes:

  • Monday, March 4 – “You’ve Been Hacked: How technology has taken you hostage (and how your parents are to blame),” chapel (10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium)
  • Tuesday, March 5 – “Powered-Off Zone: A space to engage, play, and create” (2-6 p.m. in the Bruin Den)
  • Tuesday, March 5 – “Finding Your Sweet Spot: Brain health and multiple intelligences information to help you increase engagement in your first (real) life,” Shalom (9 p.m. in Cap & Gown Room)
  • Wednesday, March 6 – “Pushing the Pause Button: Practical tips for learning to be still, bored, and centered,” chapel (10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium)

Dr. Dodgen-Magee is a licensed psychologist, truth communicator and Jesus follower. She had one of the first computers in her class when she was a graduate student “a million years ago,” and was the last person in her family to get an iPhone. She is a reluctant geek and an avid reader of research.

Don’t forget the all-employee meeting scheduled for this afternoon (Thursday), from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Concerts take Bauman stage Thursday and Saturday nights

The George Fox music department proudly presents its Symphonic band in concert tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. Music from “Lord of the Rings” will be featured.

On Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. the music department proudly presents its choral groups in concert. Groups performing include Chamber Choir, Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir. A special feature of this concert will be the first hearing of the newly installed organ, both in a solo presentation as well as accompanying the Concert Choir.

Both concerts are in Bauman Auditorium and admission is free to both events.

The “Growing Strong” conference is from 8 to 11:30 a.m., with breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. for early risers. Our keynote speaker is Kevin Jones, who will speak on “Pulling Tough Weeds: Communicating with Difficult People.”

Joel Perez discusses immigration in Monday’s LACI lecture

The university’s spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series continues this Monday, March 4, with a lecture by Joel Perez, dean of inclusion and leadership at George Fox. The presentation is the latest on the theme “State of the Union.”

Monday’s session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. Joel will present “Actions are Illegal, Never People: Comprehending the Complexity of Immigration in the U.S.,” in which he will provide a brief history of immigration in the U.S. and its appeal as an immigrant destination. He’ll also share stories of current immigrants, with a focus on those who would benefit from legislation such as the DREAM Act.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Workshop on writing successful research papers is Saturday

Interested in strengthening your academic writing skills? Come to “Steps to Writing a Successful Research Paper,” a workshop presented by Writing Consultant Sierra Neiman and Reference Librarian Robin Ashford, on Saturday, March 2.

Please plan to come for one, two, or all three of the following segments:

  • 1-1:30 p.m.: “Using APA Style”
  • 1:45-2:20 p.m.: “Steps to writing a successful research paper,” including developing a research question, engaging in research, creating a thesis statement, and editing your work
  • 2:30-3 p.m.: “Using Turabian style

Oregon high school choirs visit campus Friday for festival

On Friday, March 1, nearly 1,000 students from 19 Oregon high school choirs will be visiting our campus and participating in the state high school choir qualifying festival sponsored by the George Fox music department.

Choirs will be performing from 8 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free and everyone is encouraged to come listen.

Nicaragua Serve Team seeks art work for fundraising project

The Nicaragua Summer Serve team is trying to come up with fun ways to “FUNdraise”! We are planning on selling our own art work for a low price to raise money. So, if you are anything like me, you have a ton of art boxed away or in a corner somewhere in your closet. If you are looking to get rid of it, or simply interested in participating, please donate it to us!
